You do not have to be perfect, but you surely have to be near-perfect. Consider that, out of every college in the United States, Stanford is 4th ranked and MIT is 7th ranked by US News. Not that this means all that much more than just saying they are good (because the top ten are really interchangeable), but the one number that really sticks out to me is over 95% of the incoming freshmen are in the top ten percent of their graduating high school class. That does not leave a lot of room for error. Both schools have a huge amount of money, research abilities, bright faculty, and countless other opportunities for student enhancement. This means that they can choose to be very selective in whom they bring into their school. Stanford would be a little less selective because they have a larger student body, but both will require top numbers in all facets of the application.
